Brisbane Gun Club Rules

REMEMBER – Safety at our shooting complex is critical

All shooters must behave in a responsible manner, being sure to display safe firearms handling at all times.
A visit to the club should be a pleasurable, safe experience every time.

    1. Every person must produce their firearms licence to the range officer and complete the Range Register, BEFORE discharging a firearm anywhere on the Brisbane Gun Club range. This must be done on each day the shooter is at the club for shooting.
    2. Unlicensed shooters must produce the required identification documentation to the range officer and complete a Form 33A. They are then to complete the range register, BEFORE discharging a firearm anywhere on the Brisbane Gun Club range. This must be done on each day the shooter is at the club for shooting.
    3. The Brisbane Gun Club is a Fauna and Flora reserve. Shooting at wildlife is prohibited.
    4. The use of eye and hearing protection is strongly encouraged at all times while shooting. Eye protection MUST be worn while shooting Skeet.
    5. Guns MUST be carried unloaded with the breech open at all times. It is preferable to carry break-action guns with the muzzle pointing forward in order to avoid accidentally striking somebody with the barrels.
    6. Magazine Guns (semi-automatic / pump-action guns) must be carried with the muzzle pointed upwards.
    7. Gun sleeves and slings are not permitted on the grounds.
    8. Guns MUST be in the shooters’ possession at all times or otherwise safely secured.
    9. The use of any firearm which is not a shotgun, or is larger than 12 gauge, is prohibited.
    10. Any firearm with a barrel length shorter than 63 centimetres (25.75 inches) is prohibited.
    11. The use and carriage of military style shotguns is prohibited at all times. (Military style firearms are those that could include: forward pistol grips, collapsible or folding stocks, detachable magazines, barrel shrouds or flash suppressors.)
    12. The use of Category D firearms is prohibited.
    13. Maximum shot size permitted at the club is No.7.5 shot (2.4mm), with the EXCEPTION of Skeet layouts 3 and 4, where the maximum shot size permitted is number 9 shot (2.1mm).
    14. The maximum shot shell load allowed is 32 grams with shot size between 7 and 9 only. [ACTA rules limit competition events to the use of 24 grams for Trench, 28 grams for Trap, Skeet and UT, with 32 grams permissible for Trap Handicap events only].
    15. The use of tracer cartridges, bird fright cartridges (or similar) or any non-target load is strictly forbidden.
    16. All persons must produce a current Firearms License to purchase ammunition.
    17. No more than two cartridges are to be loaded at any time in any firearm.
    18. An unlicensed participant may only shoot single barrel (only loading and firing one cartridge at a time). This rule may be relaxed during competition events but only with prior approval granted by the range officer and the discipline captain.
    19. Licensed shooters can only have one unlicensed shooter under their supervision. (This rule does not apply to BGC conducted ‘Come and Try’, or similarly conducted experiences).
    20. No gun should be closed except when the shooter is located as follows:
      • on the shooting tracks / station, ready to shoot; or
      • at the pattern plate; with the approval of the Range Officer.
    21. In the event of a misfire or gun malfunction, the shooter shall keep his / her gun pointed in the direction of the target area and call for the range officer / referee’s assistance.
    22. Immediately after shooting from any station the gun must be opened while still pointed in the direction of the target area. When shooting Trap, Olympic Trap (ISSF Trench) and Universal Trench (UT), all cartridges MUST be removed from the gun when moving from lane 5 to lane 1.
    23. In Skeet, a shooter cannot load cartridges into their gun until is it is his/her turn to shoot and they are standing on the station they are to shoot from.
    24. In Skeet, a shooter must open AND unload their gun before stepping off the station.
    25. On the appearance of a red flag from the trap house all shooters MUST immediately open their guns and unload.
    26. Persons under the influence of alcohol are NOT PERMITTED TO SHOOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. Alcohol may only be consumed within the licensed areas.
    27. People using the club are required to dress in a clean, neat and tidy manner. For safety reasons shooters are not permitted to shoot in thongs, scuffs or bare feet. Footwear worn must have a restraining strap or support at the heel.
    28. Firing the gun from any position other than orthodox (from the shoulder) is prohibited, with the exception of someone with a physical disability who has prior approval from a (ACTA) Rules Supervisor. Any shooter firing a gun from any position other than the shoulder will be immediately suspended by the BGC Committee
    29. Any person considered to be in breach of any of the club rules is liable to be immediately suspended by the BGC Committee, pending an investigation into their actions.
    30. Any person committing an unsafe or anti-social act shall be liable for suspension, disqualification or other action as determined by the BGC Committee.

Approved by the BGC Committee on 9 January 2025.
